Discover How Lists Can Prevent Procrastination

By Jason Pearson | August 5, 2008

Do you find yourself getting to the end of a long day and realizing that you accomplished hardly anything you set your mind to accomplishing?  Unfortunately, you are not alone, my friend.  You see, the majority of people are procrastinators at one thing or another, and unfortunately, it is usually the one thing that you like doing the least.  If you work at home, or are working to get to that point, you will find that you have to push yourself hard to get every task accomplished.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  There are probably many of you out there that don’t feel like that fits you.  However, have there ever been certain projects you wanted to get done, but you waited until the last minute, and hurried and stressed yourself through it just to get it done on time?  There really isn’t anything good about stress and it is especially not good if you are hurrying through your work.

The first thing you need to think about before ending your day is what you have to do the next day.  What kinds of things do you want to accomplish?  What must be accomplished?  There will almost always be certain tasks that are not as important as another.  You will usually find that some tasks can wait until the next day, but some have to get done right away.

If you work with deadlines, you know they are extremely important.  If you are writing for a paper, for example, if you don’t meet the deadline to get your article in, you will miss getting it printed in that week’s paper.  With your business, it is highly important that you get the pertinent things done first.

It really doesn’t have to be that complicated.  If you know what you need to get done the next day, you can simply make a list of everything.  After you have done this, put a star or highlight the tasks that need to get done first and that need accomplished that day.  Next, the other tasks on your list need to be evaluated to see if they absolutely have to get done or not.  Do you sometimes feel overworked?  If so, chances are, you are putting too much on your list each day.  Try to shrink it up some if you are rezlizing that you can’t get everything done that day.  Some tasks are bigger than others and will take more time.  You may start on one of them, but you may not be abel to finish it that day.  That is o.k. - just make sure you keep it on the list for the next day to continue working on it.  This is where most people start the procrastination.  You have started something and then don’t finish it.  If you keep rolling over to the next day’s list, it has to get done.

If you have never made lists before for each day, challenge yourself to try it for a week.  If it doesn’t help you stay on track and accomplish more, you can stop the process.  From my experience, anyone who does this trick and sticks to it will succeed in what they want to do.

We will continue this next time with more time management tactics that have been proven to be successful.  If you want to know more about how to be successful with your business…
